The Hacienda was the pulse of Manchester’s youth nightlife in the ’80s and ’90s. These days—as with so many of the UK’s dance clubs—it’s the location of yuppie flats. Most of the club’s interiors—from urinals to lighting—was sold and scattered across the landscape. Filmmaker Chris Hughes tracked most of them down, however, and now the relics and the club from which they sprang have become the subjects of his new documentary Do You Own The Dancefloor. The film premieres this Saturday at the Royal Northern College of Music, and seems a fascinating look at both nostalgia for times past and a potentially foreboding look at what may be the future of many current institutions of dance.
