How Computers Learned To Speak

Computers can talk. But that wasn’t always the case.

One of the classic images of science fiction is of the computer that can talk—either as a friend or a cold, optimized foe. David Viens of Plogue has been delving into the history of the first automated computerized speech programs which gave voice to your Mac, Commodore 64 or Atari (and in some instances, even made it sing). His research has been part of developing Chipspeech—a piece of software that painstakingly recreates those original 16-bit computer thoraxes that have become so intertwined with our imaginations of the future.
