True DIY: Artist Creates Synth From His Own Stem Cells

In probably the most DIY move ever, Australian artist Guy Ben-Ary created a synth out of his own stem cells. On his website he writes: “The Sculptural object of cellF embeds a fully equipped, high precision biological lab that allows following the most complex biological protocols that are needed for the differentiation of the stem cells and the maintenance of the MEA neuronal cultures in field conditions.” In laymans terms, Ben-Ary had to grow an external brain and a robotic body to interface with the brain and thus create sound. He’s giving the full run down of the process on his website, from taking the first blood samples to the first actual performance.
