Embrace Your Inner Gabber With These Classic Thunderdome Videos
The legendary Dutch gabber festival will have its 25th anniversary party this weekend.
If you’ve been paying attention, then you know that gabber is beginning to enjoy something of a comeback. We’ve covered this in detail via our piece on the arrhythmia-inducing antics of Poland’s travelling WIXAPOL S.A. parties (and also via this photo exhibition about the global hardcore fashion scene). But while these new gabber currents are fascinating, they should still be considered in the context of the subculture that surrounds and predates them.
That’s why you ought to pay attention to Thunderdome’s 25th anniversary party this weekend, on October 28, at Jaarbeurs Utrecht. Originally started in 1992 (and technically “officially ended” in 2012), the Dutch festival has long been a torchbearer for dance music’s harder and faster styles via its many events and CD compilations. Accordingly, the party this weekend will feature a mix of new favorites and old veterans, like Paul Elstak, Marc Acardipane and The Dark Raver. Find more information here.
We’ll readily admit this isn’t for everyone. To find out if it’s something for you, scroll on to watch some of the classic promo videos from Thunderdome’s ’90s heyday.
