Listen To A Trippy New Song By Two Buchla Masters

“Closed Circuit” is a new song on Suzanne Ciani and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s forthcoming Sunergy, a new joint release on FRKWYS.

Suzanne Ciani is one of the most important figures in the history of electronic composition. A master synthesist—most notoriously with the Buchla 200 West Coast weapon—Ciani has been an inspiration and teacher for a new generation of budding experimental musicians.

It is fitting then that, as part of RVNG’s record series FRKWYS, Ciani has teamed up with one of the most exciting next-generation avant-garde synthesists, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Smith has shown her chops on two of the better modern Buchla records—2015’s Euclid and 2016’s EARS—and, like Ciani, displays a similarly playful sensibility for modular performance while still showing an immensely deep knowledge of the instrument.

The FRKWAYS series has always brought together pioneering musicians separated by a generation into creative dialogue. And, judging by “Closed Circuit”, this one might be the best of them all. It begins with bubbling sequences lapping against glistening synth textures. The beautiful textured pops and snaps of the Buchla form a melodic phrase that will carry you off into the warm, psychedelic washes of ambience at the end.
