The Black Madonna, DJ Rachael and more feature in a new film that aims to recalibrate the role of women in dance music.
A new documentary courtesy of Smirnoff Equalizing Music is highlighting the frequently overlooked role that women play in dance music. The short film spotlights The Black Madonna and DJ Rachael as they travel from Kampala, Uganda to Chicago for the female-centric DAPHNE festival, an event series founded by The Black Madonna herself in 2015. The pair discuss the struggle of being recognized as equals in a scene dictated by men, as well as their mission to counteract the exclusive nature of many male-dominated festivals on the international stage.
