Discover Pauline Oliveros' 1968 Field Recordings
American composer, technological innovator and educator Pauline Oliveros has made numerous contributions to contemporary electronic and experimental music in her decades-long career. One of her best-known contributions is deep listening, which EB’s Mark Smith describes as “a multifaceted concept that’s hard to reduce to a simple definition. Roughly, it’s an exploration of hearing—both active and passive—as a community-building tool and a general approach to understanding creativity.” Now, someone has unearthed a cache of field recordings made at the San Diego Zoo on November 14, 1968.
