Straight From 1976: Read The First Interview With Prince
“I think it is very hard for a band to make it in this state, even if they’re good.”
In 1978, Prince signed a contract with recording giant Warner Bros. and released his brilliant debut album For You. He then followed that up with Prince in 1979, and by that point it was pretty clear that the multi-instrumentalist from Minneapolis would later go on to become one of the most iconic pop stars of his generation.
But what was Prince like before his breakout success? For that you can now turn to this rare first interview from his high school newspaper. Even at the young age of 18, Prince was already expressing angst at not having made it big.
Our favorite part has to be the throwaway line: “He also sings sometimes, which he picked up recently.” Which pretty much encapsulates Prince’s raw talent right there. You can read the whole interview here.
