You Can Control These Hands-Free Earbuds By Smiling

These cool devices can detect facial expressions and turn them into commands for your phone.

The future of hands-free might be in something as simple as a smile. Computer interaction researcher Denys Matthies has developed prototype earbuds that use embedded electrodes to recognize the shape of the wearer’s ear canals. These gadgets flex in response to any changes in facial expression and translate these movements into phone commands using an electric field. So far, the earbuds can pick up on nuanced facial changes like smiling and winking with 90 percent accuracy. Matthies believes that with further research the technology could eventually assist those with disabilities or limited mobility.
