Istanbul-based musician Görkem Şen is the creator of an intriguing instrument called a Yaybahar. According to Art the System, “The Yaybahar can be played in a variety of different ways using mallets or a bow. The vibrations from the strings are transmitted via coiled springs to the frame drums, [and] are turned into sound by the membranes which echo back and forth on the coiled springs.” The hypnotic results wouldn’t sound out of place at Atonal—watch a demo video here.
