The ex-Spacemen 3 mastermind transforms “Hall of Mirrors” into a dazzling psychedelic slow burner.
Pete Kember, probably better known by his pseudonym Sonic Boom, has always been a genius of minimalist pop aesthetics. As a member of space rock duo Spacemen 3 Kember constantly showcased an uncanny sensibility for the power of repetition, elongated shifts in atmosphere and, of course, those drawling, dead-pan vocals. He puts all of these qualities to work in the above video, a live cover of Kraftwerk’s hypnotic pop number, “Hall of Mirrors” from 2008. It just goes to show he ain’t no slouch when it comes to synth programming either.
