Explore Obscure Cosmic Disco With This New Mix By Legendary Italian DJ Beppe Loda

A mix from Beppe Loda at Sameheads in Berlin.

The recording is from a party at Berlin’s Sameheads club a few months ago.

Berlin has a thriving underground disco community. One of the central meeting points for this scene is the small, arty Neukölln dance club, Sameheads—which we featured in our The Ultimate Guide To Every Berlin Club Worth Going To In 2018 listicle. Last week we introduced you to Franz Scala, an Italo-obsessed promoter associated with the Sameheads family. This week, we have a mix by Italian cosmic disco pioneer Beppe Loda that was recorded live at the club back in May.

The mix works on two fronts: It’s a nice snapshot of the wild and fun energy in the club’s basement, and it’s a convenient introduction to the endlessly fascinating genre known as Afro, Afro/Cosmic or Cosmic, which, unlike Italo disco, was actually played in underground clubs in Italy in the ’70s and ’80s. One such club was Typhoon in Gambara, Brescia, where Loda was a resident.
