Does Piracy Actually Help Digital Music Sales?
A new study, published by an economics researcher at Queens University, suggests that illegal file sharing can actually boost legitimate sales by serving as “free advertising.” While sales of physical media may drop, the word-of-mouth generated through the circulation of digital files can ultimately promote popular artists’ work. The researcher, Christopher Lee, was working with a data set that included 250,000 albums and 4.8 million downloads from a private BitTorrent tracker.
