This Dress Asks: Would You Wear A Swarm Of Drones?

If you’re having trouble telling if the dress displayed in the video below is an item of clothing or a high-tech art installation involving drones, then TranSwarm Entities did its job.

The “sculptural high-fashion dress” won third place at Telekom’s Fashion Fusion competition, which invited students and industry newcomers to submit inventions that explore the intersection between fashion and technology by creating innovative wearable devices. For instance, the winner was a “virtual personal trainer” called Trainwear that monitors and advises the wearer just like an IRL personal trainer.

The 12 finalists all showed their prototypes at a Berlin Fashion Week event in January, and the top three contestants were awarded up to €20,000 each. Since Trainwear took the top spot, it also received the opportunity to bring its product to the market.

The runners-up were Mimeme, an augmented reality app that allows users to alter and add to outfits they see, and TranSwarm, a dress designed by Maartje Dijkstra that’s made of 3D-printed bird skulls and tiny drones that fly around the garment in a small swarm. The machines’ movements sync with the beats in a supplemental track made by Beorn Lebenstedt, who produces as Newk. Check it out below.
