You’ve got to give Ellen Allien some credit. For decades, the German artist has pushed an unrelenting vision of dance music that’s both stripped-back and densely emotive.

The video for the BPitch label head’s new track, “Free Society”, continues to modernize this outlook by turning Berlin rave tropes on their heads, collaging archived footage of ravers from the Love Parade era with dancers from today. The video’s intense lo-fi aesthetic matches the track’s crunchy drums and earworm lead line, creating a vibe that should appeal to techno fans of old while pushing forward toward something new.
