It’s hard to believe, but it happened. And it still makes for a fun intro to the wonders of synthesis.
Back in the ’80s West Coast synth pioneer Suzanne Ciani went on The David Letterman Show—the comedians edgy pre-Late Night morning show—to demonstrate the then cutting-edge Prophet 5. She demonstrates it with finesse by showing off the odd and futuristic sounds it’s capable of. Letterman seems baffled by the new technology as Ciani distorts their voices through a microphone. She even plays some familiar sounds used in TV commercials before ending with an ambient sample of her own music. Give it a watch below.
