Shigeru Miyamoto’s original theme for Super Mario Bros. is easily one of video game music’s most-loved works. It’s a classic, but it’s not exactly club material. Enter Super Mario Compact Disco, an obscure remix CD from 1993 intended for the Japanese market.
The CD is an official release by Nintendo that’s full of hip-hop and techno reinterpretations of classics like the theme to Super Mario Kart and Super Mario World.
All of the works were performed by the Ambassadors Of Funk, a UK outfit who released a string of ravey hits in the late ’80s and early ’90s. It also features the voice of “M.C. Mario”, which despite what you might think, sounds like a midv’90s UK pirate radio presenter. Give it a spin above. Alternatively, watch this unbelievably weird music video from the project.
