Mixing house, hip hop and club music with fierce attitude, ballroom music has been finding its way into DJ sets across the globe.
On the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, PBS traveled to New York City—where ballroom and its notorious vogue dance began—to paint a modern picture of the scene. Over the course of the video, they tap some of the ballroom’s biggest movers, including Qween Beat Records founder and DJ MikeQ and house father Jose Xtravaganza—who taught Madonna how to vogue—to talk attitude, throwing shade and the infectiousness of the “Ha” crash.
