Remember How Weird ’90s Dance Music Videos Were?

From Daft Punk to Darude, the ’90s had their music videos on lock.

The ’90s will always be remembered as being a pretty bizarre time for electronic music. Rave, hardcore and acid house were edging their way into mainstream music consciousness along with their associated cultural symbols—like the acid house smiley face—and wild sartorial sensibilities.

The biggest dance and pop music crossovers were often pretty confused mixtures of style and taste, and their music videos were no different. Whether it was a man in a dog mask prowling New York City for Daft Punk’s “Da Funk”, Darude’s impossibly epic video for “Sandstorm”, or the alternate gabba fantasy of Dune’s “Hardcore Vibes”, the ’90s certainly stamped their style in the art of the music video.
