The Oram Awards Will Celebrate Women Innovating Music And Sound

The pioneering legacy of the British composer properly honored.

Few figures in modern electronic music have been as influential as Daphne Oram. Oram’s work as a composer, innovator and producer with the famed BBC Radiophonic Workshop—which she co-founded—was fundamental to opening up new horizons for electronic and experimental music. It’s fitting, then, that The PRS Foundation and the New BBC Radiophonic Workshop have announced the Oram Awards to celebrate women involved in the innovation of music and sound.

The inaugural award ceremony is set to take place June 3 at the Turner Contemporary art gallery in the British seaside town of Margate. Electronic Beats favorite Róisín Murphy and mastering engineer Mandy Parnell (who worked on Aphex Twin’s Syro) will lead the team of judges overseeing the award winners; the panel will also include representatives from the Daphne Oram Trust. While we wait for the recipients to be announced, listen to a mix of 35 pioneering female musicians below.
