How To Turn Broken Records Into Beautiful Works Of Art

Greg Frederick is creating striking pop art made from shards of vinyl, sleeves and record packaging.

Do you have a few old records lying around, some free wall space and a bit of a spare time? Maybe it’s time to bring out your creative (and destructive) side and put those broken 12″s to use. As the work of New York-based artist Greg Frederick shows, shards of vinyl can be a striking material in artistic practice. His “Vinyl Pop Art” portraits of iconic musicians are rendered through the meticulous placement of snapped vinyl, cassettes and record packaging. According to the artist, the pop portraits came about through his dual obsessions with celebrities and street art; he counts Banksy, Mr. Brainwash and Shepard Fairey as inspirations. Check out Broken Records Magazine’s interview with Frederick in the video below.
