Last week, DJ Detweiler (who rose to prominence by inventing a genre called #flutedrop) ran into some trouble with Soundcloud regarding his remix of John Cage’s silent composition, 4’33”. The company issued a takedown notice, which Detweiler promptly shared to Facebook, citing copyright infringement. The story has since developed into a global game of telephone and fueled heated discussion around copyright and the state of online journalism in 2015. In a statement to Business Insider, meanwhile, Soundcloud argued that Detweiler’s piece was in fact not silent, but contained a Justin Bieber sample. Ben Davis finally summed up the story yesterday on artnet.com, effectively turning the whole thing into a groundbreaking piece of conceptual art.
