Watch An Orchestra Of 273 Theremins Made From Russian Dolls

Now here’s something you don’t see every day.

If you were thinking of breaking the Guinness World Record for largest theremin ensemble any time soon, you might want to make sure you and your crew have got your numbers right. Because unless you and 273 other like-minded theremin players can get something serious together we bet the Mandarin Electron ensemble will be holding the prize for quite some time.

The ensemble is the brainchild of Masami Takeuchi, a master theremin who studied under Leon Theremin’s relative and pupil Lydia Kavia. In 2013, the ensemble gathered to perform “Amazing Grace”, and the results are pretty incredible. As if the spectacle of a 273-strong theremin orchestra wasn’t spectacular enough, the ensemble also chose to use Matryomin, a theremin packed inside the compact form of a traditional Russian Matryoshka doll (there are many other weird theremins: like this owl and this dead badger). Check it out below.
