Videodrome 138 – This week’s best videos
Each week, Moritz Gayard rounds up the best new music videos so you don’t have to.
Since the SXSW is over, the music video world is back on track and there are some infamous videos to unveil is this week’s Videodrome potpourri. You can see some nice animation in the new video for the Thee Oh Sees. Then there’s some trippiness to offer in Avey Tare’s new video. All football fans should definitely watch the Farocki-inspired video for Koen Holtkamp, who’s part of the Thrill Jockey camp and then there’s some cool East African retro pop, brought to you by Sudanese singer, Alsarah. Ah, and you won’t find Kelis in here.
#1 Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks – “Strange Colores”, directed by Olivia Wyatt
New Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks! Nothing gets me excited like new music from the Animal Collective dudes! Enter the Slasher House album is out in April via Domino.
#2 Sculpture – Polymorphic Operator
New glitchy clip for the short “Polymorphic Operator” track by Sculpture. Taken from his album Membrane Pop.
#3 Thee Oh Sees – “The Lens“, directed by Alex Theodoropulos.
Watch the crazy video from Thee Oh Sees! Absolutely amazing! The album is called Drop and will be out on April 19th via Dwyer’s own Castle Face Records.
#4 Alsarah & The Nubatones – “Soukura”, by Maryam Parwana
The Sudanese-born and Brooklyn-based artist Alsarah is on a rise.
#5 Route 8 – “I Can’t”
Bass. A very good deep house (!) song from Britain’s Route 8, with a nice little black and white video, courtesy of the upstart Greek label Nous Disques.
#6 Efdemin – “The Meadow”, by Phillip Sollmann and Hanna Schwarz
As you might know, Efdemin is back with his new album Decay, watch the Kyoto-recorded video above and get more insights, while reading our interview.
#7 Daniel Avery – “Drone Logic”, directed by Joshua Lipworth
Yes man, this sounds like good old acid rock. You know, Rhythm Device et al.
#8 Diarrhea Planet – “Babyhead”
Here’s Diarrhea Planet’s ridiculous new video for “Babyhead”. I don’t know where to even start. Just watch it yourself. And then watch this.
#9 Raury – “God’s Whisper”, directed by Andrew Donoho
17 year-old Atlanta native Raury just released this strange video for his track “God’s Whisper”, taken from the upcoming Indigo Child project.
#10 Kim Deal and Morgan Nagler – “The Root”
I just want a girl as cool as Kim Deal.
#11 Tinashe ft. SchoolBoy Q – “2 On”
Singer, songwriter and former model Tinashe finally released the video to her ScHoolboy Q-collaboration, “2 On”.
#12 Ratking featuring King Krule – “So Sick Stories”, directed & Edited by ERIC K. YUE
NYC rap collective RATKING have teamed up with King Krule, which is just good new. The New York hip hop outfit’s debut album, So It Goes, will be out on April 7th.
#13 Funkadelic feat. Moodymann – “Sloppy Cosmic”
“Sloppy Cosmic” is taken from the original 1973 Funkadelic album Cosmic Slop. But above’s version is only availabe on 12” vinyl. So you better enjoy this retro clip.
#14 The Body – “To Carry The Seeds Of Death Within Me”, Directed by Richard Rankin
RVNG Intl. is on a run and just about to drop the second album of the Irish team called The Body.
#15 Koen Holtkamp – “Between Visible Things”
You can feel some sort of a Farocki-vibe in this video for Thrill Jockey’s Koen Holtkamp.
