Videodrome 148 – This month’s best videos
Every month, Moritz Gayard sifts through the deluge of new music videos so you don’t have to.
Hey kids, the ‘drome is back on EB with an extra dose of high-quality music videos. As always, there are no boundaries, so we included the likes of Dean Blunt and Arca alongside with starlets like—you guessed it—Jennifer Lopez and Yelle. There’s also The Bug’s over-the-top clip for “Function / Void,” as well as Ariel Pink’s hilarious video for “Put Your Number In My Phone.” And a site note: Come and join me at Berlin’s ACUD club for a full VIDEODROME extravaganza next week Wednesday, October 8. UPDATE: added this extra nice Groundislava vid at the bottom of the page.
#1 The Bug – “Function / Void”, directed by Factory Fifteen
This computer-generated sadness sums up how fucked up our world is. Can’t wait to see Kevin Martin live tomorrow, right here in Berlin.
#2 Metronomy – “Month of Sundays”, directed by Callum Cooper
I almost fell out of my chair watching this.
#3 Young Thug – “2 B’s (Danny Glover)”, directed by Be El Be
Finally, Young Thug dropped his video for the single “2 B’s” a.k.a. “Danny Glover,” which also features an appearance from Birdman.
#4 Cibo Mato – “Deja Vu”, directed by Jean Claude Billmaier
Here’s a lovely datamosh-y video for “Deja Vu” off Cibo Mato’s 2014 comeback LP Hotel Valentine. It was shot entirely on an Xbox Kinect camera.
#5 The Juan MacLean- “A Simple Design”, directed by Gabe Imlay & Juliet Rios
A great video and vocals by Nancy Whang. What else do you need?
#6 YELLE – “Complètement Fou”, directed by Milord and L’Etiquette (MAL)
Quand je me coupe, je ne saigne pas, je cicatrise. Et je te fais signe depuis l’autre rive.
#7 Tweedy – “Low Key”, directed by Nick Offerman
A Nick Offerman-directed Tweedy music video featuring Michael Shannon, John Hodgman, Conan O’Brien, and many other guest stars? Count me in!
#8 UMA – CALM/EASY, directed by Ella Zwietnig
New lo-fi video for the austrian-german duo, funded by “Senat für kulturelle Angelegenheiten der Stadt Berlin“.
#8 Ariel Pink – “Put Your Number In My Phone”, directed by Grant Singer
Watch the creepy new video for the effortlessly catchy first single “Put your number in my phone” from Ariel Pink’s forthcoming album Pom Pom…if you dare.
#9 Arca – “Thievery”, directed by Jesse Kanda
Check out the ambiguous and cool video for “Thievery” by Venezuelan producer Alejandro Ghersi, aka Arca, who recently confirmed his collaboration as co-producer on Björk’s next album. Thievery is taken from his upcoming debut album Xen, set for release in November via Mute.
#10 Jennifer Lopez ft. Iggy Azalea – “Booty”, directed by Hype Williams
Then pop that, pop that.
#0 Groundislava feat. Rare Times – Girl Behind The Glass , directed by The Great Nordic Sword Fights
This nice new music video for Groundislava’s “Girl Behind the Glass” Is Actually a Videogame. Interactive, you know. Tune is taken from Frozen Throne, which is out now on Friends of Friends.
