Villalobos preps new EP and remix album
In 2008, Chilean/German producer Ricardo Villalobos released his Vasco mini-album on Perlon. One year later he collaborated with Japanese producer Fumiya Tanaka on the single ‘Fumiyandric’ for Sundance Records – not that many releases for one of the most influential techno producers and DJ’s of recent years.
That’s all going to change during the next two months however as Villalobos is preparing a joint release with Anthony Collins and Los Updates – the ‘Joli Chat’ EP, which is due to be released in April on Nice Cat Records. With ‘Joli Chat’, Villalobos is returning to his previous collaborations with Chilean pop-star Jorge Gonzales (Los Updates) from 2009. Both artists had a had a hand in the production of the record with Anthony Collins joining in on the deep, pumping track ‘I Throw Water Into The Lake’.
But even more exciting than this EP is Villalobos’ upcoming release on ‘Edition Of Contemporary Music‘ (ECM), masters of contemporary classical music and Jazz. Villalobos and fellow Berlin musician Max Loderbauer (Moritz von Oswald Trio, Chica And The Folder, NSI and Sun Electric, just to name a few ones) were granted access to the complete musical archives of the highly respected Munich-based label. Villalobos and Loderbauer’s re-interpretations of the catalogue include pieces by Arvo Pärt, Alexander Knaifel and Christian Wallumrød. Re:ECM as the remix-album is titled, is due to be released at some point in May 2011 and we can expect a deep fusion of ambient and jazz with lots of percussion.
For now you can catch up with Villalobos in several cities around Europe: He’s playing at Berlin’s Panorama Bar this Friday, TDK Time Warp next weekend and he will be joining forces with Luciano for Carl Craig’s next stop on the ’20 Years of Planet E’-tour in Mannheim.
