Watch Die Antwoord’s Mental Video For the Aphex-Sampling Track “Ugly Boy”
Nearly six months after South African rap troupe Die Antwoord released its third LP, Donker Mag, he zef disciples have returned with a video for “Ugly Boy.” According to the Donker Mag album inserts (as quoted by Rap Genius), the track was “a mindfuck” to write due to he bandmates’ history: frontman Ninja and leading lady Yo-Landi Vi$$er broke up, then Visser started to date a Capetown gangster, who provided the inspiration for “Ugly Boy.” Although we can’t imagine helping a former flame express her infatuation with a new lover, Die Antwoord managed to mold the tension into a killer track and a mental video.
“Ugly Boy” slaps romantic-yet-unsettling verses over a beefed-up sample of “Ageispolis” by former live collaborator Aphex Twin, whose logo can be spotted on a white hoody alongside a suitably eccentric wardrobe of gold tracksuits and raven outfits. There’s even time to squeeze in a series of cameos from Marilyn Manson, Flea, The ATL Twins, and Jack Black.
